FIRST SOUNDS // Discomfort Designs Phantom Limb

January 13, 2025 | Alan

I’ve been eying up the brand  @discomfortdesigns  for a little while now, and really wanting to try some of their offerings like the Icelandic Spar or the newest release, Phantom Limb. Y’all know I’m a sucker for stereo effect and when I found out the PL was mono, I stuck my nose up at it in proud, stuck-up stereo defiance.

But the PL kept nagging at me, creeping up in the back of my mind, and I just couldn’t shake it. I managed to snag one in a trade, and even though come to think of it, the trade wasn’t in my favor, just a few seconds with the Phantom Limb had me jaw-dropped realizing I was indeed the victor of the trade!

The Phantom Limb is everything I hoped it would be (even though it’s mono! Lol)! It’s simple to use and produces complexly musical sounds. I’ve heard it compared to a MOOD or Microcosm, and I can definitely see those nods. I might add the Count to 5, Habit, and the newer Matthews Technician in the mix of what it harkens. However, don’t let comparisons muddy your pre-conceived notions, the PL has a distinct flavor and brings all the chirpy glitchy microlooped delays to its full mono glory!

Come along this ride with me as I explore the first sounds gathered through the Phantom Limb. Let’s see what we can uncover together!
