At The Pedal Collaborative, we’re always excited to dive into the unique sounds and capabilities of different guitar pedals. In our latest video, we take on the challenge of replicating the beloved Strymon Flint’s reverb and tremolo magic using the versatile Meris MercuryX. This comparison pits two heavyweights against each other, showcasing how the MercuryX can emulate the classic tones of the Flint.

The Strymon Flint: A Revered Classic

The Strymon Flint is renowned for its exceptional combination of reverb and tremolo, covering sounds from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. It offers three types of reverb (spring, plate, and hall) and three types of tremolo (harmonic, tube, and photocell), making it a versatile tool for any guitarist. One of our friends even claimed that the Flint was the one reverb they couldn’t replicate with any other pedal.

The Challenge: Replicating Flint’s Sounds on the MercuryX

Enter the Meris MercuryX. While it might not have been designed to specifically replicate the Flint, its flexibility and powerful sound-shaping capabilities make it a worthy contender. We crafted several presets on the MercuryX, aiming to capture the essence of the Flint’s distinctive sounds. Our goal was to see if we could convincingly emulate the Flint’s revered tones.

Exploring the Presets

In the video, we demonstrate three custom presets on the MercuryX, each designed to match the Strymon Flint’s settings:

  1. ’63 Tube Tremolo and ’70s Plate Reverb: This preset combines a rich tube tremolo with a lush plate reverb, aiming to recreate the depth and warmth of the Flint’s vintage sounds.
  2. ’61 Harmonic Tremolo and ’80s Hall Reverb: Here, we explore the harmonic tremolo paired with a spacious hall reverb, delivering a sound that’s both nostalgic and expansive.
  3. ’65 Photocell Tremolo and ’60s Spring Reverb: This preset captures the lively and dynamic character of the Flint’s spring reverb and photocell tremolo, perfect for those classic surf rock vibes.

Using my Fender Custom Shop Telecaster, we dial in these presets and demonstrate the MercuryX’s impressive ability to capture the Flint’s magic. While the MercuryX operates differently than the Flint, the results are strikingly similar, proving that with the right tweaking, you can achieve those coveted tones.
