We’ve all been down this road before, questioning the supposed magic of buffers. Do they really make a noticeable difference in our sound? Buffers are often used to restore tone lost over long signal chains, but today we’re testing their sonic noticeability with a very small setup. Using the FX loops in the Line 6 HX Stomp and the 29Pedals EUNA (Elite UNity Amplifier), we’ll compare the EUNA against the Foxpedals K Buffer, or even using neither and just relying on the HX Stomp.

Setup and Test Method

To test these buffers, I’ve set up my guitar to run through the following chain:

  1. Spaceman Apollo
  2. Strymon BigSkyMX
  3. Line 6 HX Stomp

The EUNA clearly makes a more noticeable difference, especially with its harmonic toggles engaged. It’s designed to eliminate tone loss and enhance frequencies, which is evident even in this short signal chain. The K Buffer offers a subtle improvement, useful for maintaining clarity but not as impactful as the EUNA.

So, is it worth getting a buffer like the EUNA? It depends on your needs and setup. If you’re running a long signal chain and noticing tone loss, the EUNA could be a valuable addition. The K Buffer is also a good option for subtle enhancement. Let me know what you think—did you hear a difference? Is this just snake oil, or do these buffers really work?
