Old Blood Noise Endeavors has done it again with their latest creation: the Expression Ramper X3. This pedal is not only packed with functionality but also brings a level of fun and creativity that is hard to match. Honestly, is there any company making better and more unique utility pedals? Each release from Old Blood Noise Endeavors seems to top the last, and the X3 is no exception.
The X3 takes three of Old Blood Noise Endeavors’ Expression Rampers and combines them into one compact, versatile package. With this pedal, you can sync the three expression rampers together, synchronize them with an external tap (like their adorable SCOOCH tap tempo), and even send that tap out to other devices. The real magic begins when you apply all this power to your favorite effects with expression control.
To demonstrate the X3’s capabilities, I enlisted the help of some of my favorite pedals: the Chase Bliss Audio MOOD MkII, the Strymon BigSky MX, and the Hologram Electronics Chroma Console. Using the X3, I was able to control various parameters on these pedals, unlocking a world of sonic possibilities.
Here’s a breakdown of my setup for this experiment:
I started by setting up each pedal with a basic tone to establish a baseline:
When combined, these pedals created a lush, intricate soundscape. Here’s a sample of the combined tone with all pedals engaged:
With the X3 in play, I began to explore its various functionalities. On the Chroma Console, I set the X3 to control the rate and time of the pitch and reverse effects. For the BigSky MX, I configured the X3 to adjust the number of heads used in the Magneto preset. Lastly, on the MOOD MkII, the X3 was set to tweak the time and modify parameters.
As I started playing, the X3 added dynamic changes and movements to the sound:
One of the standout features of the X3 is its tap tempo functionality. I used the SCOOCH tap tempo to sync the expression changes across all pedals, creating rhythmic patterns and synchronized effects. This added a new layer of control and creativity, making it easy to achieve complex, timed modulation effects.
Here’s an example of how the tap tempo influenced the sound:
The X3 also includes random waveforms, which can add an element of unpredictability to your sound. Engaging the random waveform setting, I was able to create evolving, glitchy effects that brought a sense of spontaneity and excitement to the performance.
Here’s a look at some random effects in action:
The Old Blood Noise Endeavors Expression Ramper X3 is a powerful and fun utility pedal that can transform your pedalboard. Whether you’re using it to sync multiple effects, control complex parameters, or add a touch of randomness to your sound, the X3 is a versatile tool that brings endless possibilities.
For those who love experimenting with sound and pushing the boundaries of their gear, the X3 is a must-have. It’s perfect for creating dynamic, evolving soundscapes and adding a new level of expression to your playing. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just starting out, the X3 offers something unique and exciting for everyone.
So, if you’re looking to add some serious fun and creativity to your pedalboard, look no further than the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Expression Ramper X3. It’s not just a pedal—it’s an adventure in a box.
